PARADE OF HEROES

"Join the Village West Rotary Club for the 4th Annual Parade of Heroes to honor our local heroes, past and present. This exciting evening parade recognizes the hard work, dedication and often, the sacrifices our armed forces, law enforcement, firefighters and other unique heroes make for us each day. Over 100 participants including fire, law enforcement, military vehicles, vintage cars, local high school bands and others begin the Parade at France Family Drive North to Stadium Drive. Joining the Parade are many of our local Veterans from WWII, Vietnam, Korea and our present day Heroes, our current soldiers, firefighters, law enforcement and other special heroes. A special Chinook Helicopter will provide entertainment in the skies while hundreds of spectators line the streets."

The Parade of Heroes will be held on Sept. 30.

Our friend and fellow Shawnee firefighter John Glaser, who was killed in action earlier this year, was selected as the Grand Marshal. Glaser's Family will represent John Glaser in the parade.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the John Glaser Memorial Fund and Army Emergency Relief.

We lost our friend and fellow fire fighter John Glaser Saturday night in a house fire. There truly are no words to describe what our fire fighting family is going through right now. No matter what line of work you are in, or how you spend your days...all you can do is try your best to stay safe doing what you love to do in hopes that life is not cut short in the process. Remember to hug and kiss those closest to you, tell them that you love them...because as wonderful as LIFE is...it is also very UNPREDICTABLE.

The FLAMIN HOTTIES come together in support to help raise funds for a local family battling cancer. This event brings together individuals concerned about cancer in a unified effort to fight back. Citizens will gather at (JOHNNY’S TAVERN) on Shawnee Mission Parkway from (6:00 pm to 10:00 pm) for a night of fundraising in support of Deborah Clark, age 29 and single mother of 3, who passed away Friday January 29th after her battle with cancer. In August of 2008 Deborah was six months pregnant with her third child when she was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. They did immediate surgery and delivered her baby boy who spent 4 months in the NICU and today he is thriving and doing well. However, after her first surgery Deborah was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. She is currently in hospice and her family is asking for help with her final arrangements and for her children. The FLAMIN HOTTIES will be on hand to serve, all TIPS and 20% of the proceeds from the evening will be given directly to the Clark family to assist with final arrangements and a donation to the fund for her children.

Sweetheart Bake Sale

Our friend and brave lil'cancer warrior Jillian Sharp and member of the RFL Team WILMS WARRIORS will be having her 3rd annual Sweetheart Bake Sale!!! Jillian and her friends in the past two years have had a bake sale to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In just two short years, Jillian’s team has raised a little over $16,000!

This year, the “Sweetheart Bakers” are going to do something different with the proceeds of this year’s bake sale. Jillian’s friend, Gabe… who lives here in Shawnee, has just recently relapsed with neuroblastoma. He was given a 30% chance of survival and with the relapse, his chance of survival is even smaller. Gabe’s mom is a teacher in the Olathe School District and the family recently found out that Gabe’s treatment has been denied because his treatment is deemed “experimental.” Children’s Mercy can no longer offer the treatment he needs so he left January 25th and will be treated at a hospital in California who treats relapse neuroblastoma. The family is not sure how they are going to pay for treatments but as any parent would, they are not going to give up and will find a way to hopefully save their son.

R.I.P. Deborah Clark

It is with sadness that we inform you that our friend Deborah Clark lost her battle with Cancer early this morning. The Hotties were just touched with her story on Monday evening through one of us...and we leapt into high gear to organize an upcoming fundraiser for her family...here is what our Hottie Beth had to say about her friends situation...

My friend Deborah is 29 years old and has been fighting cancer for the last year and a half. Deborah is a single mom of three kids. Her oldest boy is in the third grade, he is nine, followed by a daughter who is 7 and is in the first grade. In August of 08 Deborah was six months pregnant with her third child when she was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. They did immediate surgery and delivered her baby boy on Aug 29th of 08, his due date was Nov 4th. Despite spending 4 months in the NICU at KU med, he was able to go home with oxygen and a respirator, and only required in home treatments for about a month. We are happy to say that today he is thriving and doing well. However, after her first surgery Deborah was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. She is currently in hospice and her family (her friends are her family) are asking for help with her final arrangements and for her children.

I have know Deborah for 11 years and I can not imagine something this terrible happening to such a nice person. Deborah has not had the best of luck in the game of life, but she has always managed to keep a smile on her face. Her ex-husband and her divorced several years ago, they had two children together. Deborah had always been a stay at home mom and until the divorce had never really worked. She did not have the best childhood. She dropped out of high school and left her family in California and has not spoken to them much since then. After her divorce, Deborah went back to school, got a job, and met a really nice guy named Jeff. Deborah and Jeff moved in together and shortly after she became pregnant. Jeff and Deborah did not get married because Deborah did not want him to be left with all of her medical bills and debts. She was no longer able to work after her diagnosis. Jeff has also taken lots of time off of work to care for Deborah and their baby. They are not in the best financial situation. Deborah has always been the type of person to focus on the positive rather than the negative. She went to Hospice House at the first of the year. Despite the doctors predictions, she has managed to fight on longer than any of them expected.

We are so sorry for this loss, and ask everyone to keep her family and friends in your thoughts. The Hotties will still be hosting the fundraiser at Johnny's on the 23rd of February...see the previous post for more information and contact us if you are interested in making a donation to this family in honor of the fight that Deborah made.

I have just published a book about my battle with breast cancer. But why would your group members be interested? Because it is not your normal cancer book. It does not just tell a story. It is not full of confusing medical mumbo jumbo as I explain everything in terms that can be understood. My book tells my story but is chock full of information on how to better survive surgery, chemo, radiation and reconstruction surgery. It is a book that would be helpful to anyone with cancer or their caregivers. It includes questions to ask each doctor in the process as well as a small dictionary. One of my doctors also added his words at the end of many chapters. He balanced out my experience so others would fully understand the potentials. It knocks down the wall of fear and puts it all out there.

All proceeds are going to the cancer center at the University of Chicago if ordered through me. our thoughts go out to her family and friends.

Amy L. Tyler, 30, of Overland Park, Kan.,
passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at home.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 18,
at Indian Creek Community Church. In lieu of flowers,
the family suggests contributions to Caring Bridge, Cancer Action,
and KC Hospice. Amy was born on October 11, 1979, in Shawnee, Kan.
She attended Olathe North High School and graduated in 1998.
She then went on to Kansas State University and became a
member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Amy graduated with a
bachelors of science in criminal justice in 2002. After college,
Amy was very active in her MOPS group at Indian Creek
Community Church. Amy was looking forward to being an
advocate for breast cancer survivors. She was preceded in death
by her grandmother Marie Fabian and grandfather Kenneth Rice,
and aunt Diane Sheldon. She is survived by her husband Kyle Tyler
and her son Harrison of the home; parents, Ken and Sandy Ladner;
sister Ellen Ladner; grandmother Lois Rice; uncle and aunt
Bobby and Shirley Ladner, and cousins Penny Smith and Laura Ladner.

On Wednesday Mike Lepore, the President of Victory Junction personally came to station to accept out donation. After our shirt sales were said and done, we raised $3074.06!!! Mike graciously accepted our gift and can't wait to break ground on the coming camp next April. They hope to have everything completed in 2011! There will be lots of information to come, as we continue to build our relationship with this organization...but for now check them out and see what they are doing for kids battling cancer.

Lisa Fiatte...

It is with much saddness that we announce the passing of our friend Lisa Fiatte. Lisa, 31, and mother of two wonderful kids, Josh and Lillian will be laid to rest this week after her long battle with Cancer. At the age of 29 Lisa was diagnosed with stage VI breast cancer. She underwent 16 rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy and 33 rounds of radiation. At the age of 31, Lisa is found herself battling cancer again. The cancer was now in her bones and in her brain. We were honored this past June to have Lisa speak at the Shawnee/Lenexa Relay for Life. She touched many of the Hotties, and though we hate that this disease won, we are glad that she is no longer in pain. Lisa...we will continue to FIGHT BACK against this disease...you are the reason we do what we do. It was such an honor knowing you...RIP.

And so we ask you to "Think Pink"

Lisa wanted to be cremated and have a memorial service at her church. Visitation will be from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Friday, November 13 at Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church, 7600 NW Barry Road, KC MO 64153. At 7:00 there will be a memorial service. She wanted everyone to wear pink. In lieu of flowers, she wanted contributions to be made to the Lisa Hinkle Trust for Lilli and Josh at Country Club Bank or the Young Survival Coalition,10520 Barkley St, Overland Park, Kansas 66212-1811. Lisa donated her corneas in the hope that someone else could enjoy life more.

"We want to thank everyone that has supported Lisa and her family in such a loving, generous, and compassionate way. So many wonderful people--it is awesome. We would like to thank the staff on 5th floor oncology at North Kansas City Hospital and Northcare Hospice for the outstanding care they provided. She was active in Mommy and Me , PTA, church, YSC, A Time to Heal, and reveled in her kid's organizations, school, and activities . Her kids were the light of her life and her sole reason for living. She loved them dearly. Lisa did not let adversity get in the way of living life to its fullest. She loved and was loved."

The MAYORS Proclamation

The FLAMIN HOTTIES have teamed up with the SHAWNEE FIRE DEPARTMENT this October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the entire month of October our Fire Fighters will be wearing these T-Shirts on & off duty to raise the awareness of those touched by this disease.

By purchasing a T-Shirt, proceeds will be donated to a local cancer charity coming soon to Kansas City, Kansas called the VICTORY JUNCTION CANCER CAMP for KIDS

Some of the Hotties Husbands (Shawnee Fire Dept.) joined by the Shawnee Police Department and the Lenexa Fire & Police Departments played in their first annual Charity Softball Game this weekend to raise the awareness on Cancer and the upcoming Relay For Life of Shawnee and Lenexa. The guys had a great time and are already talking about making this a County Wide event in the future!

I went to a TAKE Defense Training last night in OP. The class is FREE and is completely worth it. I want to recommend it to all the women in my life that I care about so that you will empower yourself to fight back if you ever find yourself in a situation that needs it. It is unfortunate to say that this is the world we live in today, but by being aware of your surroundings and paying closer attention to your gut when things don't feel right you can prevent yourself from being a victim. The skills that they shared with us are simple, it is for anyone at any age, and I signed up for this again since it will be in my neighborhood this summer. An Elegant Evening - Sweet Life of Shawnee

The Flamin Hotties recently volunteered their time at the Sweet Life Of Rosehill in Shawnee. We have asked for so much from our community these past few years in support of our efforts to beat the war on Cancer, that it felt right to start giving back with our time. So we decided that our first event would be to assist those who have given the most in their lifetime within this community. The event was called An Elegant Evening. The residents spent the day getting all dressed up. Everyone had a great time taking dinner orders and serving the residents on their special night. We want to give a big Thanks to Shelly Gray - the Director of LifeStyle Enrichment who worked with us and let us get involved.

Have a Pizza - Help Save a Life

Some of us Hotties attended this event last fall for Amy Tyler who is battling breast cancer. I just read on her carepage (See the link on the right column) that they are hosting a second fundraiser for her this Saturday February 28th at the Pizza Shoppe at 736 Park Street in Olathe. The event will be hosted from 11:00am - 9:00pm and all profits made between those hours will be donated to Amy and her family to help ease the financial burden of her increasing hospital bills. So if your thinking of having Pizza on Saturday...why not stop in and make your meal count. Help Save Amy Tyler!

OPERATION: SAVING AMY

When many of us think of breast cancer, we think of middle aged or elderly women, however, the horrible reality is that breast cancer knows no age. Amy Tyler is a beloved 28-year-old wife to Kyle, mother to one-year-old Harrison, and wonderful friend to many. Amy was recently diagnosed with stage ll ductal carcinoma. This is the most aggressive form of non-hormonal induced breast cancer. Five months ago, Amy was nursing her son when she found the tumor. At first, the doctors thought she just had a clogged milk duct. That would have been the most likely cause of a lump on a breastfeeding woman of her age. However, Amy’s lump did not go away like she had hoped, but instead, grew larger. Amy, her family, and friends were all devastated upon receiving the diagnosis of breast cancer. Amy is a fighter though, and with her family and friends behind her she took her stand against cancer. Amy’s cancer had only spread to one lymph node and after having a radical mastectomy; she is now fighting her cancer with chemotherapy. As you can imagine, this has been an extremely difficult and emotional time for Amy and her family. Amy is a very strong person, and with the support of family, friends, and the community Amy will win this battle. She wants nothing more that to continue to be a loving wife and caring mother to her son. Due to this unexpected and life changing situation, a benefit is being organized by her family, friends, and sorority sisters. Operation: Saving Amy will be held on October 25, 2008, to assist her and her family during this time of need. All money raised will go directly to the Tyler’s to help pay for Amy’s medical bills and treatment expenses. We are asking the community to help Amy fight her battle with cancer, a battle that is becoming all too much of a reality to so many of us today. If you have children, think of how much you would not want them to grow up without a mother. Think of your spouse or significant other and know how Kyle would feel without Amy. Think of your own mother and how you would hate to lose her or for her to lose you. With each person that stands up to cancer a life is saved. Help save Amy’s life. Your consideration of this request to help Amy is greatly appreciated. Any support that you can offer to Amy and her family is welcome. Thank you for your generosity and caring spirit.

This week the Flamin Hotties were contacted by The Shawnee Magazine (a sunflower publication) who informed us that they were interested in doing a feature story on our Team which will run in the Spring issue! Last night at our meeting we were introduced to Kimberly Stern, a freelance writer who will be writing our story. Kimberly's husband Richard lost his battle with Cancer only 8 Months ago...which brought this experience full circle for all of us. We wanted to send out a big THANK YOU to Kimberly for listening to us. We are all very excited to have her on board for this project and we hope that she will join us in our continued efforts to put out the Flames of Cancer!

Welcome to the Official Blog Site of the FLAMIN HOTTIES! We are a Fire Fighter family who have been brought together in support of families and friends who have battled cancer.

2009 will be our Fourth year to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. We just wrapped up our 2008 Relay last June and our team raised $18,376.37 in the fight against this disease. We hope that you will continue to check back as we start to kickoff our 2009 Relay for Life!!

Each year the American Cancer Society hosts Relay For Life walks in cities around the nation to raise money for cancer research and cancer awareness. These 12-hour walks generate millions of dollars to add to the fight to help find the cure for cancer. Continue to check back with us as we gear up to approach 2009 with more determination and gusto than before!
